Where I come from
I learned photography before digital. Thirty-six exposures on a roll of film. Every frame cost money and had to earn its place before you pressed the shutter. You didn't hold it down and sort it out later. You learned to see the moment. That way of looking at material never left me.
For years I worked culling and editing the output of hired photographers, reducing thousands of frames down to the shots that were actually saleable. You do that long enough and it becomes muscle memory. You stop deliberating and start seeing immediately what matters and what doesn't.
Don't let history disappearI once watched a company ledger get thrown into a skip during an office clearance. The first page recorded the company's very first sale. Decades of institutional history, gone because nobody recognised what they were discarding. Important things rarely disappear overnight; they disappear gradually, one device at a time.
Who does this
Steve Anderson: I bring twenty years of experience curating visual archives across four countries. At UNESCO-recognised Sagomuseet in Sweden, I built a tagged image bank system that is still in continuous use fifteen years later.
I've photographed hotels, resorts, hospitals and commercial projects, and spent years making the judgement about which images actually communicate the quality of the work.
I'm responsible for the curation, visual judgement and building of the Field Tool.
